First steps to take when you move home

The process of moving home can prove very stressful; however the fun doesn’t stop just because you’ve finally moved in. There are many things to take care of in the first week but don’t fear, once these tasks are complete, you can at last enjoy your new surroundings in peace.

Property Insurance

Firstly, you want to inform all relevant parties that you have moved. Whilst friends and family are likely to know, it’s only polite to send new address cards to them, telling them where they can reach you in the future. What’s more, you’ll need to let your mobile phone provider, landline provider, electricity supplier and whichever company takes care of your gas that you have too. You should contact your bank to tell them as well.

Secondly, make sure you arrange your property insurance. Whether its contents or building insurance you need (or maybe both), it’s crucial to do this as soon as possible. Although the chances of anything bad happening are very slim, if something did happen and your possessions weren’t protected, you would kick yourself. It’s a necessary evil and in the long run, could save you a lot of heartache.

Next, if you’re renting, double-check what the inventory says and be sure to add to it if required. The estate agent or landlord will likely have undertaken an inventory when you moved in. They should give you the chance to do the same; reading through theirs and adding anything on – usually within a seven-day period. This will protect you and them should anything go wrong during the tenancy.

Lastly, remember to enjoy! It’s a new abode and an exciting change in life. You must remember that it’s there for you to enjoy, not just to get stressed over; so once all the hard work’s done, make time just to relax in it.
